Chasing the Light of Science and Technology, Letting Innovative Dreams Take Flight
——2025 Guangzhou Primary and Secondary School Students’ Scientific Literacy Competition Successfully Held
Recently, the final of the 2025 Guangzhou Primary and Secondary School Students’ Scientific Literacy Competition officially kicked off at Yuquan School in Huangpu District, Guangzhou. Sponsored by the Guangzhou Municipal Bureau of Education, undertaken by Yuquan School in Huangpu District, and co-organized by the Guangzhou Youth Science and Technology Education Association, the competition gathered 700 teachers and students selected from all districts of the city, jointly presenting a youth science and technology feast integrating scientific inquiry, innovative practice and humanistic literacy.
As an annual key event in the field of science education for primary and secondary schools in Guangzhou, this competition has attracted much attention since its launch. Data shows that the number of pre-registrations for the competition was nearly 4,000, covering more than 400 primary and secondary schools across the city. After multiple rounds of district-level selection, 288 outstanding teams stood out and advanced to the final. The competition was divided into three groups—primary school, junior high school and senior high school—targeting primary and secondary school students in the whole city. At the final venue, the contestants demonstrated rigorous inquiry, confident presentation, innovative achievements and unique artistic understanding in various events, highlighting their solid scientific foundation and spirit of innovative exploration.

At the opening ceremony, a drone formation lit up the sky with changing light and shadow. Robots and cheerleaders jointly staged a dynamic performance, showing the integration of science, technology and art, and kicking off this science and technology feast. Afterwards, Principal Xiao Yuning, representative of the host school, delivered a welcome speech, introducing that the school regularly offers courses such as scientific literacy and brain science, promoting the transformation of national-level scientific research resources into basic education. The person in charge of the Scientific Research Office of the Municipal Bureau of Education attended the event and pointed out in his speech that seven ministries including the Ministry of Education jointly issued the Opinions on Strengthening Science and Technology Education in Primary and Secondary Schools, further clarifying the important mission of consolidating the foundation of scientific and technological innovation talents. As a core engine of scientific and technological innovation in the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area, Guangzhou has always placed the cultivation of teenagers’ scientific literacy in a prominent position, committed to building a stage for children with scientific and technological dreams, and letting the scientific spirit take root and germinate on campus.

This competition set up five core events: scientific inquiry, popular science essay writing, science and technology exhibition, popular science explanation and AI painting. These events test practical research ability, build a bridge for scientific expression, display innovative achievements and promote the integration of art and artificial intelligence respectively, realizing the combination of “science + humanities”.

The competition is an important measure to implement the “double reduction” policy and deepen the reform of science education, which helps cultivate teenagers’ scientific spirit and innovative ability. In the future, Guangzhou will continue to build science education platforms, promote the integration of science education into campuses and classrooms, and lay a solid foundation for the cultivation of scientific and technological innovation talents.
