2026 Gelv · Dong’ao Island Loop Run Kicks Off

The 2026 Gelv · Dong’ao Island Loop Run kicked off on January 11th. Hosted by Zhuhai Gexin Development Co., Ltd., the event attracted more than 500 trail running enthusiasts from all over China to gather on Dong’ao Island. As the longest single-island running event in terms of route length and the largest in scale among the Wanshan Islands, the loop run welcomed participation from seasoned runners, including Xiong Zhengqiang, the runner-up of the 100km Ultra-Trail du Mont-Blanc (UTMB) in Jeju Island, South Korea; Dong Yunyun, the champion of the Hengqin Marathon; and Peng Shimei, the champion of the Zhuhai Banzhang Mountain Trail Run.

It is learned that the loop run is divided into 24km and 10km categories. The 24km race passes through iconic scenic spots on Dong’ao Island such as Honeymoon Pavilion, Windmill Hill, the Ancient Fortress, and the Classic of Mountains and Seas Bookstore. The 10km category is set up with individual and parent-child groups, featuring a moderate elevation gain and scientifically designed mileage to provide a relaxed and pleasant outdoor running experience for participants of different levels. Runners can enjoy the beautiful coastal scenery of the island while running and feel the harmonious integration of nature and sports. In addition to the sports event, participants can also experience outdoor leisure activities such as island camping and yacht trips, and enjoy high-quality island accommodation services and diverse entertainment programs.

Many participants said that running on the island with sea breeze blowing and green forests swaying allows them to feel the comfort and beauty brought by sports and natural scenery as the views change with each step.

To ensure full safety for the participants, the organizing committee has collaborated closely with the Municipal Health Bureau, Wanshan District and other relevant units. Multiple medical stations and rescue support points have been set up along the route, equipped with Automated External Defibrillators (AEDs), professional medical personnel and emergency vehicles, thus building a comprehensive safety guarantee network.
