Passenger Traffic of Guangzhou-Shenzhen-Hong Kong High-Speed Railway Hong Kong Section Hits New High of Over 30 Million in 2025

MTR Corporation Limited (MTR) announced on the 4th that the passenger traffic of the Guangzhou-Shenzhen-Hong Kong High-Speed Railway Hong Kong Section reached a new high in 2025, exceeding 30 million and representing a year-on-year increase of 17%.

It is reported that on December 27, 2025, the West Kowloon High-Speed Railway Station recorded nearly 140,000 passenger trips in a single day, breaking the daily passenger flow record. Since the operation of the Guangzhou-Shenzhen-Hong Kong High-Speed Railway Hong Kong Section in September 2018, the cumulative passenger volume has recently exceeded 100 million.

MTR stated that the majority of current high-speed rail passengers are for short-distance trips, accounting for approximately 80% of the total. The proportion of Hong Kong residents among the total passenger trips has risen from about 30% at the initial stage of operation to around 45%, with the rest being mainland and overseas tourists. This reflects that the high-speed rail has boosted personnel interaction and exchanges.

Ms. Janet Yeung, Chief Executive Officer of MTR, said that since the line’s opening, MTR has actively engaged in close collaboration with mainland railway authorities and governments to increase stations and enhance services. Going forward, the company will continue to maintain close coordination with relevant parties to improve travel experience and expand the network.

At present, the West Kowloon High-Speed Railway Station in Hong Kong offers direct services to 96 destinations across the country, with a minimum of 208 train services operating daily.
