The HKSAR Government has vigorously promoted digital education, and Hong Kong students have continued to achieve excellent results in STEAM-related competitions. Co-organized by Hang Lung Properties Limited and the Hong Kong University of Science and Technology, the winners of the 2025 Hang Lung Mathematics Award were announced, with the award ceremony held last night to commend the outstanding accomplishments of all shortlisted students. In her speech, Secretary for Education of the HKSAR Government Choi Yuk-lin stated that the Hang Lung Mathematics Award not only recognizes students’ exceptional performance in mathematics but also effectively sparks their passion for the subject, continuously nurturing young talents in Hong Kong. This is highly aligned with the direction of Hong Kong’s school education, which emphasizes self-directed learning, problem-solving skills and creativity. She called on all sectors of society to collaborate, enabling students to continuously benefit from the advancing development of digital and mathematical modeling education.
This year’s Hang Lung Mathematics Award received an enthusiastic response, attracting nearly 100 teams from over 50 secondary schools across Hong Kong to compete. Li Siu-man from Hong Kong Chinese Women’s Club College won the Gold Award with his research paper titled Markov Chains Associated with Ultraspherical Polynomials: An Analysis of Weak Convergence and First Passage Time Functionals. The Silver Award went to Wong Kui-lam, Li Yan-lam, Lo Chun-lam, Kiu Lok-hei and Wong Cheuk-lok from St. Paul’s Co-educational College, while the Bronze Award was claimed by Fu Sze-ho, Ko Yun-tung, Puk Hoi-chun and Yeung Wai-kwan from Queen’s College. All winning teams delved deep into advanced mathematical fields, and their research outcomes fully demonstrated outstanding problem-solving abilities, creativity and rigorous academic spirit.
Chen Wen-po, Chairman of Hang Lung Properties, remarked that talent development is undoubtedly a long-term investment. The strong support extended by students, schools and the academic community to the Hang Lung Mathematics Award is truly encouraging, and it further reinforces the shared mission of advancing mathematics education and pursuing excellence continuously. Looking ahead, the company will continue to collaborate with various sectors to inspire young students to pursue their passions in mathematics, science and technology, and help them unlock their full potential.
Nancy Ip, President of the Hong Kong University of Science and Technology, stated that the Hang Lung Mathematics Award is more than just an academic competition; it serves as a platform to inspire students to push the boundaries of knowledge and encourages them to conduct original research using rigorous methodologies. By carefully nurturing promising young mathematical talents and providing them with valuable opportunities to access world-class training, we are collectively advancing Hong Kong’s vision of becoming an international innovation and technology hub.
Another highlight of the ceremony was a thematic seminar titled Mathematics Everywhere: The Language of “Exploration”, featuring a dialogue between two heavyweight scholars. The keynote speakers included Richard Schoen, Winner of the 2017 Wolf Prize in Mathematics and Chairman of the 2025 Hang Lung Mathematics Award Academic Committee, and Mok Ngai-ming, Winner of the 2022 Future Science Prize, Chairman of the Hang Lung Mathematics Award Steering Committee and Member of the Academic Committee. The two top mathematicians conducted an in-depth analysis of the future landscape of mathematics education and discussed how the younger generation should equip themselves to meet challenges and stand out in an era of rapid technological advancement.
