The election for the President of the Legislative Council of the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region (HKSAR) was held on January 8, and Starry Lee was elected as the President of the 8th Legislative Council.
On the morning of the same day, the HKSAR Legislative Council held a special forum for candidates for the President of the 8th Legislative Council. At the forum, Starry Lee and Chan Chun-ying, the two candidates for the President of the Legislative Council, separately presented their election platforms and answered questions from Members of the Legislative Council. The election for the President of the Legislative Council took place after the forum and was conducted by secret ballot.
In the end, Starry Lee won the election with 47 votes and was elected as the President of the 8th Legislative Council.
After her election, Starry Lee met with the media and stated that the 8th Legislative Council of the HKSAR is the second Legislative Council since the improvement of the electoral system and the implementation of the principle of “patriots governing Hong Kong”, and she deeply feels the heavy responsibility of assuming the office of the President of the Legislative Council. Hong Kong will still face many challenges in the future, but “no matter how difficult a task is, it will be accomplished if we take action”. She will handle all affairs with a fair, impartial and unbiased attitude.
Starry Lee said that this year marks the first year of the implementation of the 15th Five-Year Plan of the country. The HKSAR Legislative Council will take the initiative to align with the Plan, promote high-quality economic development, and assist Hong Kong in integrating into the overall national development. She hopes to maintain efficient cooperation with the HKSAR Government.
All 90 Members of the 8th Legislative Council of the HKSAR took their oaths of office on January 1. The Legislative Council will hold its first meeting on January 14, focusing on the follow-up work of the fire at Wang Fuk Court in Tai Po.
